Der Franziskanische Orden war seit der Mitte des 13. Jahrhunderts in Ennis tätig und unterhielten das Kloster. Auch nach der Auflösung des Klosters unter Heinrich VIII. in den 1540ern betreuten die franziskanischen Mönche die katholische Gemeinde, oft im Geheimen. Nach der Verabschiedung der Katholischen Emanzipationsgesetze 1829 durften die Franziskaner wieder öffentlich aktiv sein, doch war ihre frühere Abtei noch immer im Besitz der Church of Ireland. Daher erbauten sie ein neues Kloster, das 1892 offiziell eingeweiht wurde. Am Vorplatz stellten sie eine Statue des Hl. Franziskus von Assisi auf, umrandet von Versen aus seinem Sonnengesang.
The Franciscan Order has been active in Ennis since the middle of the 13th century and also run the monastery. Even after the dissolution of the monastery under Henry VIII. in the 1540ies the Franciscan monks ministered the Catholic community, often in secret. After the passing of the Catholic Emancipation Act in 1829 the Franciscans could act again in public, yet their former friary was still owned by the Church of Ireland. Therefore they build a new friary that was officially consecrated in 1892. In the forecourt they put up a statue of St. Francis of Assisi surrounded by verses from his Song of Praise.
