Franziskaner Kloster / Franciscan Friary

Das Kloster von Ennis wurde in der Mitte des 13. Jahrhunderts vom regierenden O'Brien Clan gegründet und vom Franziskaner Ordern geführt. Es wurde zu einer wichtigen Stätte theologischer Studien, bis es 1540 unter Heinrich VIII. aufgelöst wurde. Die Mönche führten einen eingeschränkten Betrieb aber weiter. Im frühen 17. Jahrhundert wurde das Kloster von der Church of Ireland übernommen und als Kirche verwendet. Nach dem Bau einer neuen Kirche für die C-o-I verfiel das Kloster. Die Franziskaner siedelten ebenfalls in eine neue Kirche um. 1969 gab die C-o-I die Klosterruine an die katholische Kirche zurück. Heute ist das Kloster ein Museum, das vom Office of Public Works verwaltet wird. Für ein paar Euros an Eintrittsgeld dürfen wir durch die altehrwürdigen Mauern schreiten.

Ennis Friary was founded in the middle of the 13^th century by the ruling O'Brien clan and run by the Franciscan Order. It became an important place for theological studies until it was dissolved in 1540 under Henry VIII. The monks however continued to operated in a limited way. In the early 17^th century the friary was taken over and used as church by the Church of Ireland. After a new church was built for the C-o-I the friary fell to ruins. The Franciscans also moved to a new church. In 1969 the C-o-I gave the ruins of the friary back to the Catholic Church. Today the friary is a museum managed by the Office of Public Works. For a few euros entrance fee we are allowed to stride betwixt the time-honoured walls.
