Maid of Erin

Am 11. September 1867 wurden Thomas Kelly und Timothy Deasy, beide Anführer der Irisch Republikanischen Bruderschaft, in Manchester verhaftet. Als sie am 18. September in ein anderes Gefängnis verlegt wurden, wurden sie von Mitgliedern der Bruderschaft befreit, wobei der Polizist Charles Brett getötet wurde. Bei der nachfolgenden Fahndung wurden William Allen, Michael Larkin und Michael O'Brien gefangengenommen und später wegen Mordes gehängt. In Irland wurde das Urteil mit Empörung aufgenommen und die drei Hingerichteten als "Manchester Märtyrer" bekannt. Zu ihrem Gedenken wurde 1881 das Monument "Maid of Erin" (Mädchen von Irland) mit den für die Personifizierung des Landes üblichen Attributen - Wolfshund und Harfe - errichtet.
On September 11th, 1867 Thomas Kelly and Timothy Deasy, both leaders of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, were arrested in Manchester. When they were transferred to another prison on September 18th, members of the Brotherhood freed them, causing the death of policeman Charles Brett. During the following manhunt William Allen, Michael Larkin and Michael O'Brien were captured and then hanged on the charge of murder. In Ireland this sentence was met with an outrage and the three executed men became known as "Manchester Martyrs". To their commemoration the monument "Maid of Erin" was erected in 1881 with the typical attributes of the personification of the country - a wolfhound and a harp.
