Newtown Burg / Newtown Castle

Die Newtown Burg wurde im 16. Jahrhundert erbaut und war im Besitz der Familie O'Brien und danach der Familie O'Loghlen. Bei der Eroberung Irlands durch Oliver Cromwell (Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts) wurde die Burg beschlagnahmt und an englische Siedler übergeben. So kam sie in den Besitz der Familie Stacpoole. Im frühen 18. Jahrhundert errichteten die Stacpooles ein Herrenhaus neben der Burg, das ein bequemeres Leben ermöglichte. Die Burg begann zu verfallen. 1989 erwarben Michael und Mary Greene das Anwesen, das sie renovierten und darin die Burren Kunsthochschule eröffneten. Dabei wurde auch die Burg wieder Instand und ein neues Dach aufgesetzt. Sie wird für Vorträge verwendet und kann für Hochzeiten gemietet werden. Der Zutritt zur Burg ist frei und wir zwängen uns durch die enge Wendeltreppe auf die vier Stockwerke des ungewöhnlicherweise runden Turms mit dem einmaligen pyramidenförmigen Sockel.

Newtwon Castle was built in the 16^th century and was owned by the family O'Brien and later by the family O'Loghlen. During the conquest of Ireland by Oliver Cromwell (middle of the 17^th century) the castle was seized and handed over to English settlers. So it came into the possession of the family Stacpoole. In the early 18^th century the Stacpooles built a mansion beside the castle which facilitated a more comfortable life. The castle started to decay. In 1989 Michael and Mary Greene purchased the estate, renovated it and established the Burren College of Art in it. In the process the castle was repaired and a roof was attached. It is used for lectures and can be rented for weddings. The access to the castle is free and we squeeze through the narrow spiral staircase upon the four levels of the unusually round tower with the unique pyramid-shaped base.
