1588 sandte der spanische König Philipp II. seine Kriegsflotte - die Spanische Armada - nach England um die dort herrschende Elisabeth I. zu stürzen. Nach mehreren Gefechten im Ärmelkanal besiegte die technisch überlegene englische Flotte die Spanier. Die verbliebenen spanischen Schiffe flüchteten in die Nordsee und versuchten über Schottland und Irland wieder in die Heimat zurück zu kommen, verloren aber auf Grund von schlechtem Wetter ein weiteres Drittel ihrer Flotte. Eines dieser Schiffe war die San Marcos, die am 20. September 1588 in dieser Bucht auf ein Riff fuhr und sank. Nur wenige der Besatzung schafften es lebend ans Land, wurden aber von den englischen Truppen gefasst und gehängt. Dieser Vorfall gab der Gegend den Namen "Spanische Spitze".
Am 2. Juli 1986 stattete des spanische Königspaar Juan Carlos und Sophia Spanish Point einen Besuch ab, wenige Tage später wurde dieses Denkmal für die 1588 verstorbenen Matrosen und Soldaten enthüllt.
In 1588 the Spanish king Phillip II. sent his war fleet - the Spanish Armada - to England to overthrow Elizabeth I. After several battles in the Channel the technically superior English fleet defeated the Spaniards. The remaining Spanish ships fled into the North Sea and tried to get back to their home country over Scotland and Ireland, but due to bad weather lost another one third of their fleet. One of those ships was the San Marco that on September 20th, 1588 run onto a riff in this bay and sank. Only a few of the crew were able to reach the land alive, but were caught by English troops and hanged. That event gave the area the name "Spanish Point".
On July 2nd, 1986 the Spanish royal couple Juan Carlos and Sophia paid a visit to Spanish Point, a few days later this memorial to commemorate the seamen and soldiers lost in 1588 was unveiled.
