Über den Hl. Felim, der im 6. Jahrhundert ein Kloster in Kilmore gegründet haben soll, ist wenig bekannt. Die in Kilmore gebaute Kathedrale wurde nach dem Beginn der Unterdrückung des katholischen Glaubens (Penal Laws) im 17. Jahrhundert von der anglikanischen Kirche übernommen.
In Folge der Katholischen Emanzipation wurde 1823 eine 1774 erbaute Kapelle zur Kirche umgebaut. Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde Cavan zum Bischofssitz und diese Kirche wurde vergrößert und in den Status einer Kathedrale erhoben. In den späten 1930ern wurde mit dem Bau einer neuen Kathedrale nach Plänen von W.H. Byrne und Sohn im klassizistischen Stil neben der alten Kirche begonnen. Die Kathedrale wurde 1942 fertiggestellt und 1947 den Heiligen Patrick und Felim geweiht. Die Beschreibung hebt besonders die Marmorsäulen aus Italien und die Glasmalereien hervor.
P.S.: Die alte Kirche wurde abgebaut und im nahegelegenen Ballyhaise wieder aufgebaut, wo sie heute noch steht.
Little is known about St. Felim, who is said to have founded a monastery in Kilmore in the 6th century. The cathedral built in Kilmore was taken over by the Church of Ireland after the Penal Laws had been passed in the 17th century.
As a result of the Catholic Emancipation in 1823 a chapel that had been built in 1774 was reconstructed as a church. In the middle of the 19th century Cavan became the seat of the bishop and this church was enlarged and raised to the status of a cathedral. In the late 1930ies the building of a new cathedral in Neo-Classical style after plans by W. H. Byrne and Son was commenced beside the old church. The cathedral was finished in 1942 and dedicate to the Saints Patrick and Felim in 1947. The description particularly emphasises the marble columns from Italy and the stained glass windows.
P. S.: The old church was deconstructed and reconstructed in the near-by Ballyhaise where it is still standing.
