Obwohl es ältere Artefakte gibt, die auf Aktivitäten der Freimaurer in Irland hinweisen, gilt die Gründung der Großen Loge im Jahr 1725 als offizieller Startpunkt. Im späten 18. und frühen 19. Jahrhundert wuchs die Gemeinschaft und auch viele Prominente (wie Daniel O’Connell oder Oscar Wilde) traten den Freimaurern bei.
In einer Päpstlichen Bulle verbat Papst Clemens XII. im Jahr 1738 Katholiken auch Mitglied der Freimaurer zu sein. Nach Veröffentlichung der Päpstlichen Bulle Quo Graviora 1826 durch Papst Leo XII. wurden diese Regel strikt durchgesetzt und die Freimaurer vor die Wahl gestellt, entweder aus der Gemeinschaft auszutreten oder exkommuniziert zu werden. Die Unvereinbarkeit von Katholizismus und Freimaurern wurde auch von späteren Päpsten immer wieder bekräftigt.
Der Grundstein für die Versammlungshalle in Cavan wurde am 1. Juli 1885 mit einem großen Festakt gelegt. Sie ist bis heute der Treffpunkt der Loge.
Although there are older artefacts hinting at activities of the Freemasons in Ireland, the founding of the Great Lodge in the year 1725 counts as the official starting point. In the late 18th and early 19th century the community grew and also many prominents (like Daniel O’Connell or Oscar Wilde) joined the Freemasons.
In a Papal Bull from the year 1738 Pope Clement XII. forbade Catholics to be also members of the Freemasons. After the publishing of the Papal Bull Quo Graviora in 1826 by Pope Leo XII. this rule was rigidly enforced and the Freemasons were given the choice either to leave the community or to be excommunicated. The incommensurateness between Catholicism and Freemasonry was also endorsed be later popes again and again.
The foundation stone of the meeting hall in Cavan was laid on July 1st, 1885 with a great ceremonial act. It is the venue of the lodge to this day..
