St. Feidhlimidhs Kathedrale / St. Feidhlimidh's Cathedral

Der Hl. Felim (Feidhlimidh) lebte im 6. Jahrhundert und soll im heutigen Kilmore (An Chill Mhór, große Kirche) die erste Kirche gegründet haben. An der Stelle dieser alten Kirche wurde eine neue Kirche gebaut, die in der Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts zur Kathedrale erhoben wurde. Die Kathedrale wurde nach der Machtübernahme durch Heinrich VIII. im 16. Jahrhundert von der anglikanischen Kirche übernommen. 1860 wurde eine neue, größere Kathedrale neben der alten errichtet, das Gebäude wurde als Pfarrsaal weiter verwendet.
Die neue Kathedrale wurde nach Plänen des Architekten William Slater gebaut und ist dem ehemaligen Bischof William Bedell gewidmet. Bedell war der erste, der das Alte Testament ins Altirische übersetzte. Beim Bau wurde auch ein Torbogen aus dem 12. Jahrhundert verwendet, der aus einer demolierten Kirche übernommen wurde. Alle Berichte im Internet loben diesen Torbogen als besonders sehenswert - aber leider ist das gesamte Gelände um die Kathedrale bei unserem Besuch abgesperrt. Wir müssen uns mit Fotos aus der Entfernung begnügen.
St. Felim (Feidhlimidh) lived in the 6th century and is said to have founded the first church in today's Kilmore (An Chill Mhór, big church). At the place of this old church a new one was built that was raised to a cathedral in the middle of the 15th century. After Henry VIII. had come into power in the 16th century the cathedral was taken over by the Anglican Church. In 1860 a new, bigger cathedral was built beside the old one, the building was reused as parochial hall.
The new cathedral was build after plans by the architect William Slater and is dedicated to the former bishop William Bedell. Bedell was the first one to translate the Old Testament into Old Irish. While building a doorway from the 12th century was used that was taken over from a demolished church. All reports in the internet praise this doorway as especially worth seeing - alas, when we visit the whole area is cordoned off. We have to be satisfied with pictures from afar.
