Normannische Motte / Norman Motte

Nahe der Kathedrale stehen die Überreste einer normannischen Motte mit Bailey. Sie wurde 1211 von Walter de Lacy errichtet, als er versuchte die Herrschaft über die Region um Lough Oughter zu erringen. Aber schon Mitte der 1220er wurde sie von Cathal O'Reilly zerstört. Und obwohl sie immer noch gut erhalten sein soll, können wir die Motte vor lauter Bäumen nicht sehen.
Close to the cathedral there are the remains of a Norman Motte and Bailey. It was built by Walter de Lacy in 1211 when he attempted to achieve domination over the Lough Oughter region. But already in the middle of the 1220ies the motte was destroyed by Cathal O'Reilly. And although it is supposed to be still in good condition, we cannot see the motte for all the trees.
