Um 600 n. Chr. gründete der Hl. Finbarr am sumpfigen Ufer des Flusses Lee eine Kirche. Diese Lage (corcaigh = Marsch oder Sumpfland) gab der späteren Stadt ihren Namen. Anfangs des 9. Jahrhundert kamen die Wikinger als Plünderer und blieben als Händler. Im 12. Jahrhundert folgten die Anglo-Normannen, die die Stadt befestigten. 1185 wurde Cork das Stadtrecht verliehen. Als wichtige Handelsstadt, Hafen und später auch Industriestandort stand Cork immer wieder im Brennpunkt von Rebellionen der Iren und deren Niederschlagung durch die Englänger. Im Irischen Unabhängigkeitskrieg wurde 1920 das Zentrum von Cork von den Black and Tan (eine britischen paramilitärischen Truppe) niedergebrannt. Danach kam der wirtschaftliche Abstieg, der erst durch den Keltischen Tiger an der Wende zum 3. Jahrtausend beendet wurde. Heute ist Cork die zweitgrößte Stadt der Republik Irland und wieder eine wichtige Handels- und Industriemetropole mit vielen Sehenswürdigkeiten.

Around 600 A.D., St. Finbarr founded a church on the swampy banks of the Lee River. This location (corcaigh = marsh or swamp) gave the town its name. At the beginning of the 9^th century, the Vikings arrived as plunderers and stayed as merchants. In the 12^th century the Anglo-Normans followed and fortified the town. In 1185 Cork got its city charter. As an important merchant town, harbour and later industrial town Cork was often the focus of rebellions by the Irish and their suppression by the English. In 1920, during the Irish War of Independence the centre of Cork was burnt down by the Black and Tan (british paramilitary troups). Afterwards the economical downfall began that was not stopped before the Celtic Tiger at the turn to the 3^rd millennium. Today, Cork is the second largest city of the Republic of Ireland and again a very important metropolis for trade and industry, with many things to see.
