Bantry

Alte Legenden berichten, dass die Gegend um die Stadt Bantry (Beanntraí - Ort der Leute von Bann) der am frühesten bewohnte Teil Irlands ist. Überreste der Megalithkultur im Umkreis sind stumme Zeugen davon. In der Bronzezeit war die Gegend wegen ihrer Kupfervorkommen sehr begehrt. Im Mittelalter und der beginnenden Neuzeit lockten die reichen Fischgründe Siedler hierher. Während der großen Hungersnot verließen mehr als zwei Drittel der Bewohner Bantry.

Für Touristen ist Bantry der ideale Ausgangspunkt für Ausflüge auf die Beara Halbinsel, auf die südlichste der Halbinseln zum Mizen Head oder auch ins Landesinnere zum Gougane Barra Nationalpark. Am Marktplatz direkt am Hafen steht eine Statue vom Hl. Brendan dem Navigator, der als erster Europäer nach Amerika gesegelt sein soll. (2015 ist die Statue nicht mehr da. Hoffentlich nicht gestohlen, wie unser Busfahrer sagt.)

Old legends tell that the area around the town of Bantry (Beanntraí - place of Bann's people) is the earliest inhabited part of Ireland. Remains of the megalithic culture in the surroundings bear silent witness of that. In the Bronze Age the area was much coveted for the copper deposits. In the Middle Ages and the beginning of the modern times rich fishing grounds lured settlers to this place. During the Great Famine Bantry lost more then two thirds of its inhabitants.

For tourists Bantry is the ideal starting point for trips to the Beara peninsula, to the southern peninsula towards Mizen Head or to the inland to the Gougane Barra national park. On the market square direct beside the harbour there is a statue of St. Brandan the Navigator, who is reported to be the first European sailing to America. (In 2015 the statue is gone. Hopefully not stolen, as our bus driver claims.)
