The isle Garinish Island (Garinis - near island), which is also called Ilnacullin (Oileán an Chuilinn - island of holly), is reputed as a special gem in the southwest of Ireland. At the beginning of the 20th century John Annan Bryce and his wife Violet bought the island and had it designed by the architect and landscape gardener Harold Peto. With much effort (even the soil had to be brought to the island) a magnificent garden with an enchanting Italian garden as the centrepiece was created on the 15 hectares large island.

After the death or Bryce's son in 1953 the island and the garden was bequeathed to the Irish state, but still maintained by the gardener Murdo Mackenzie.
