Die Legende erzählt, dass der Hl. Patrick (390-461) das Wasser einer Quelle im heutigen Park neben der Kathedrale benutzt haben soll, um zum Christentum konvertierte Iren zu taufen. Dokumentiert hingegen ist, dass hier bereits am Ende des 12. Jahrhunderts eine Kirche stand. Mitte des 13. Jahrhunderts wurde die Kirche in den Status einer Kathedrale erhoben und entsprechend ausgebaut. Im Laufe der nächsten Jahrhunderte fanden immer wieder Erweiterungen und Erneuerungen statt. Eine Generalsanierung Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts verlieh der Kathedrale ihr heutiges Aussehen. Sie ist die größte Kathedrale der Church of Ireland.

According to legend, St. Patrick (390-461) used the waters of a well in today's park beside the cathedral to baptize Irish people who had converted to Christianity. It is however documented that at the end of the 12^th century there already was a church at this site. In the middle of the 13^th century the church was upgraded to a cathedral, both in status and in appearance. During the following centuries several extensions and renovations were made. An extended reconstruction in the middle of the 19^th gave the cathedral the appearance it still has today. It is the larges cathedral of the Church of Ireland.
