Leinster Haus / Leinster House

(2017-07-14)

Kildare House was designed in 1745 by Richard Castle for James FitzGerald, Earl of Kildare, who used it as his town residence. When the earl was promoted to the first Duke of Leinster the house was renamed to Leinster House. The exterior of Leinster House was the model for the White House in Washington. After the "Act of Union" (1800), which resulted also in the dissolution of the House of Lords, the house was sold to the Royal Dublin Society. Later the National Library and the National Museum were housed here in newly built wings. In 1925 the government of the newly founded Republic of Ireland bought Leinster House and adapted the rooms for the two houses of the parliament, which hold their meetings here since then.
