Zollhaus / Custom House

Als das alte Zollamt gegen Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts baufällig wurde, wurde beschlossen auf einem unbebauten Stück Land weiter östlich ein neues Zollamt zu errichten. Der damalige Chief Commissioner, John Beresford, beauftragte damit den Architekten James Gandon, der das Gebäude 1791 fertigstellte. Das neue Zollamt wird von dorischen Säulen, allegorischen Darstellungen der dreizehn irischen Flüsse sowie der Erdteile und von der Statue der Wirtschaft auf der Spitze der Kuppel verziert. Ein Löwe und ein Einhorn flankieren die Irische Harfe, das Königreich Irland symbolisierend. Während des Irischen Bürgerkrieges 1921-1922 wurde das Innere des Zollamts vollständig durch Feuer zerstört, was nach Kriegsende umfangreiche Restaurationsarbeiten erforderlich machte.

Unter den vielen Statuen, die das Zollhaus zieren, befinden sich auch 14 Steinköpfe, welche den Atlantischen Ozean and die großen Flüsse Irlands darstellen.

When the old custom house became ramshackled at the end of the 18^th century, it was decided to build a new one on an unoccupied piece of land farther east. The then Chief Commissioner, John Beresford, assigned the works to the architect James Gandon, who completed the building in 1791. The new custom house is decorated with Doric columns, allegorical representations of the thirteen rivers of Ireland and the continents, and with the statue of Commerce on the top of the dome. A lion and a unicorn flank the Irish Harp, symbolizing the Kingdom of Ireland. During the Irish Civil War 1921-1922 the interior of the custom house was completely destroyed by fire, which made extensive reconstruction works necessary after the war had ended.

Among the many statues decorating the Custom House there are 14 Riverine Heads representing the Atlantic Ocean and the Great Rivers of Ireland.
