Swords (Sord Cholmcille) ist die Hauptstadt der Grafschaft Fingal (Fine Gall, helle Fremde), die in den 1990ern bei der Aufteilung der traditionellen Grafschaft Dublin in mehrere Verwaltungsbezirke entstand. Die Gründung der Stadt wird dem Hl. Columba in 6. Jahrhundert zugesprochen. Im 11. und 12. Jahrhundert wurde die Stadt mehrmals von Wikingern und irischen Clans überfallen. Trotzdem sind dem Mittelalter noch einige sehenswerte Gebäude erhalten geblieben (siehe einzelne Einträge).

Für uns ist 2019 die Nähe zum Flughafen ein wichtiger Punkt, um uns diese lebhafte Stadt wieder einmal genauer anzusehen.

Swords (Sord Cholmcille) is the county town of the County Fingal (Fine Gall, bright strangers) that was created in the 1990s when the traditional County Dublin was split into administrative districts. The founding of the town is credited to St. Columba in the 6^th century. During the 11^th and 12^th century Swords was sacked by several times Vikings and Irish clans. Still several buildings from the Middle Ages that are still worth seeing remain (see individual entries).

The closeness to the airport is in 2019 an important item for us to have again a look at this bustling town.
