Schon ab den 18. Jahrhundert gab es hier einen privaten Garten der Familie Leeson. Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts (und nachdem er mehrfach den Besitzer gewechselt hatte), wurde er als "Coburg Gardens" erstmals für die Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht. 1870 kauften Edward Cecil Guinness (Lord Iveagh) und sein Bruder Arthur Edward Guinness (Lord Ardilaun) den Garten und das Herrenhaus. In den 1930ern schenkte Rupert Guinness, der 2. Lord Iveagh, das Land dem Staat Irland unter der Bedingung, dass es unbebaut bleiben müsse. Ab den 1990ern übernahm das Office of Public Work die Pflege und Gestaltung des Gartens. Bei unserem Besuch war leider ein Teil des Gartens wegen Bauarbeiten gesperrt.
As early as the 18th century there was a private garden belonging to the Leeson family at this location. At the beginning of the 19th century (and after changing the owner several times), it was opened as "Coburg Garden" for the public. In 1870 Edward Cecil Guinness (Lord Iveagh) and his brother Arthur Edward Guinness (Lord Ardilaun) bought the garden and the mansion. In the 1930s Rupert Guinness, the 2nd Lord Iveagh, gifted the garden to the Irish state under the condition that it remained "unbuilt on". Since the 1990s the Office of Public Work is tasked with the maintenance and the decoration of the garden. Alas, during our visit a part of the garden was closed due to construction work.
