Nachdem der Hl. Columba, der auch Columbkille (Colm Cille - die Taube der Kirche) genannt wurde, den Streit um das Cathach verloren hatte und in Ungnade gefallen war, und bevor er auf die schottische Insel Iona ins Exil ging, gründete er mit seinen Anhängern eine Siedlung in diesem Tal, das nun seinen Namen trägt: Glencolumbkille (Gleann Cholm Cille) - das Tal des Columbkille. Doch schon die Menschen, die vor 5000 Jahren hier lebten, haben ihre Spuren hinterlassen, von Menhiren bis Gigantengräber. After St. Columba, who was also called Columbkill (Colm Cille - the dove of the church), lost the battle for the Cathach and had fallen into disgrace, and before he went into exil on the Scotish isle of Iona, he and his followeres founded a settlement in this valley that since bears his name: Glencolumbkille (Gleann Cholm Cille) - the valley of Columbkille.
