Im 5. Jahrhundert entstand im Nordwesten Irlands ein Königreich, dessen Machtzentrum das Grianan Aileach war. Diese Könige von Ailech führten ihre Linie auf König Niall Noígíallach zurück und werden auch Northern Uí Néill (nördliche O'Neils) genannt. Im 12. Jahrhundert zerbrach dieses Königreich, der westliche Teil, Tyrconnell, wurde zum Herrschaftsgebiet des Clan O'Donnell. Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts war Hugh Roe I. O'Donnell (Aodh Ruadh mac Néill Gairbh Ó Domhnaill, 1472 - 1505) der Clanführer. Er festigte die Macht des Clans, indem er die Burg und die Abtei erbauen ließ. Zu seinem Gedenken wurde am Hafen eine Statue von Maurice Harron aufgestellt.

In the 5^th century a kingdome rose in the north-west of Ireland, which had its stronghold at Grianan Aileach. These kings of Ailech claimed a lineage back to king Niall Noígíallach and therefore are called Norther Uí Néill. In the 12^th century this kingdom was split, the western part, Tyrconnell, became the dominion of the O'Donnell clan. At the end of the 16^th century the clan leader was Hugh Roe I O'Donnell (Aodh Ruadh mac Néill Gairbh Ó Domhnaill, 1472 - 1505). He secured the power of the clan by building the castle and the abbey. To commemorate him, a statue by Maurice Harron was set up in the harbour.
