St. John's Point

Der Leuchtturm am St. John's Point zählt zu den großen Leuchttürmen Irlands, also ist er ein Muss bei unserer Reise 2017. Und wir werden nicht enttäuscht. Während der Leuchtturm stumm seiner Arbeit nachgeht, rauscht um ihn herum der Wind und das Meer, unterlegt von den Wellen, die an die hohen Klippen schlagen. Der Wind reisst auch immer wieder die Wolkendecke auf, so dass der Leuchtturm von der tiefstehenden Sonne wie von einem Punktstrahler vor dem grauen Himmel hell erleuchtet ist.
Der Leuchtturm wurde 1831 in Betrieb genommen, 101 Jahre später wurde er automatisiert. Seit 1962 wird das Leuchtfeuer elektrisch betrieben, mit der Möglichkeit auf Azetylenbrenner zurückzufallen falls notwendig.
The lighttower at St. John's Point belongs to the Great Lighthouses of Ireland, so it is a must see during our journey in 2017. And we are not disappointed. While the lighttower silently does its work, the sounds of the wind and the sea are all around it, underlayed by the waves beating on the steep cliffs. The lighttower was set into operation in 1831, 101 years later it was automatised. Since 1962 the light fire is electrically powered, with the possible backup by a acetylene burner in case of need.
