Lough Derg

Lough Derg (Loch Dearg) liegt am Ende eines Tals, die R233 führt direkt von Pettigoe (Paiteagó) zu seinem Ufer. Als sich der Hl. Patrick in dieses Tal und auf die Insel im See zur Medidation zurückzog, war der Weg sicher noch nicht so gut ausgebaut. Die Insel wurde in späteren Jahren "St. Patricks Fegefeuer" genannt, und seit 1500 Jahren folgen Pilger den Fußspuren des Heiligen. Und wo Patrick einst in einer Höhle wohnte, steht jetzt das gut ausgebaute Pilgerzentrum.

Lough Derg (Loch Dearg) lies at the end of a valley, the R233 goes to its shores straight from Pettigoe (Paiteagó). When St. Patrick retreated to this valley and the isle on the lake for medidation, the way was surely not so comfortable. The isle was later named "St. Patrick's Purgatory", and since 1500 years pilgrims follow the footsteps of the saint. And where Patrick once dwelled in a cave, today stands a well developed pilgrim's centre.
