Barnesmore Durchbruch / Barnesmore Gap

Nordöstlich der Stadt Donegal führt die N15 durch den Barnesmore Durchbruch (An Bearnas Mór, der große Durchbruch) zwischen den Bergen Croaghconnellagh (523 m) und Barnesmore (451 m), Seite an Seite mit dem Fluss Lowerymore (An Lamhraigh Mhór). Das Tal wurde von Gletschern ausgeschliffen und war seit je her eine wichtige Verbindung zwischen dem Süden und dem Norden Donegals. So wichtig, dass es ein Anziehungspunkt für viele Wegelagerer wurde, die hier nur auf ihre Opfer warten mussten. Ab der Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts wurde eine Garnison beim Durchbruch stationiert, die für die Sicherheit der Reisenden zu sorgen hatte.
North-east of the town of Donegal the N15 leads through the Barnesmore Gap (An Bearnas Mór, the great gap) between the mountains Croaghconnellagh (523 m) and Barnesmore (451 m), alongside the river Lowerymore (An Lamhraigh Mhór). The valley was carved out by glaciers and has always been an important connection between the south and the north of Donegal. So important, in fact, that it attracted many highwaymen, who just had to wait for their victims. Since the middle of the 18th century a garrison was stationed at the gap to ensure the saftey of the travellers.
