Inch Abtei / Inch Abbey

Schon im 8. Jahrhundert gab es hier eine Abtei auf einer Insel im Fluss Quoile. Der Name leitet sich von dieser Insel (inis) ab. Wikinger plünderten die Abtei im 11. und 12. Jahrhundert. John de Courcy übergab 1188 das Land den Zisterziensern. Die heute zu sehenden Ruinen stammen von Gebäuden aus dem 12. oder 13. Jahrhundert. Die Abtei wurde 1542 aufgelöst.

Wir gehen durch die Ruinen und lesen die vielen interessanten Schautafeln über die Abtei und das Leben in ihr. Plötzlich eilt eine Schar von Touristen durch die Abtei. Was ihnen ihr Führer dabei erzählt, verstehen wir nicht. Zufällig kommt ein Einheimischer vorbei, der sich zu uns auf die Bank gesellt und erklärt, dass hier ein Drehort von "Games of Throne" war. Wir plaudern mit ihm noch eine ganze Weile, bis sein Hund unruhig wird und er seine Gassirunde fortsetzen muss.

Already in the 8^th century there was an abbey on an island of the Quoile River. Its name is derived from this island (inis). Vikings raided the abbey in the 11^th and 12^th century. John de Courcy handed the land over to Cistercian monks in 1188. The ruins that can be seen today are from buildings from the 12^th and 13^th century. The abbey was dissolved in 1542.

We walk through the ruins and read the many interesting panels with information of the abbey and life in it. Suddenly a crowd of tourists hurries through the abbey. What they are told by their guide we cannot understand. By chance a local man passes by, who joins us on the bench and explains that this is one of the filming spots of "Games of Thrones". We chat on with him for a while, until his dog becomes uneasily and he has to continue walking the dog.
