Nordmotte / North Moat

(2019-10-02)

Although named "moat" this here is a "motte", an artifical earthen mound. Already in the first millennium, it is reported, the stronghold (dun) of the King of Leinster was on this spot, with according importance to local politics. When the Vikings settled in the area in the 9th century, they heaped up the mound, says the information board. Other sources mention the Normans in the 12th century as builders. In the 18th century a house was constructed on the top of the motte that was used by the British Army.

The South Mote that once stood in Naas Fairgreen does no longer exist.
