In pre-Christian time there was a ford across the Liffey in todays Celbridge (Cill Droichid, the church at the bridge). In the 5th century St. Mochua built a church close to the ford.
The town of Celbridge developed around the mill, the abbey and the castle built by the Norman Thomas de Hereford in the early 13th century. In the 18th century William Connolly acquired the town, had it modernised and gave it its present townscape.
