Burg / Castle

Kilteel (Cill Chéile) ist eine kleine ruhige Ortschaft abseits der Hauptstraßen. Im Mittelalter war es jedoch ein wichtiger Ort entlang der Straße von Dublin nach Naas, daher gibt es hier ein paar ältere Bauwerke zu sehen. Der Grabhügel liegt auf privatem Gelände und ist nicht zugänglich. Die Burg ist einfach zu erreichen. Es wurde im 13. Jahrhundert von den Normannen erbaut und im 15. Jahrhundert verstärkt, um das Pale (das Gebiet um Dublin, in dem die Briten ihren größten Einfluss hatten) zu befestigen. Unter Cromwell (17. Jahrhundert) eroberten die Briten die Burg, das Pale wurde aufgelöst und Kiltee verlor an Bedeutung.

Direkt neben der Burg steht noch das alte Torhaus (am Foto rechts). Der runde Turm könnte ein Überrest der alten Abtei sein, der in die Burg miteingebaut wurde.

Kilteel (Cill Chéile) is a little quiet village aside from the main routes. During the Middle Ages however it was an important place on the road from Dublin to Naas, so there still are several old buildings to see. The barrow lies on private property and is not accessible. The castle is easily found. It was built in the 13^th century and enhanced in the 15^th century to fortify the Pale (the area around Dublin where the British had their most influence). Under Cromwell (17^th century) the British conquered the castle, the Pale was dissolved and Kilteel lost its importance.

Directly beside the castle is the old Gate House (on the picure to the right). The round tower could be a remain of the old abbey that was incorporated into the castle.
