Kildare Burg / Kildare Castle

Im Hinterhof des Hotels "Silken Thomas" finden wir nach einigem Suchen die Überreste der ehemaligen Burg von Kildare (sie sind leicht zu sehen, aber nicht leicht zu erkennen). Als die Normannen Kildare erobert hatten, errichteten sie vermutlich eine Motte, die im 13. Jahrhundert durch ein steinernes Gebäude ersetzt wurde. Die Burg hatte vier Türme, eine Kapelle und eine Küche. Der Zugang zur Burg erfolgte durch ein Torhaus, das im 15. Jahrhundert in einen Wohnturm umgebaut wurde. Dieser Wohnturm und ein paar Mauern sind alles, was von der Burg noch übrig geblieben ist.
In the backyard of the hotel "Silken Thomas" we find after some searching the remains of the former castle of Kildare (it is easy to see, but not easy to recognise). After the Normans had conquered Kildare, they most likely built a motte, which was replaced by a stone building in the 13th century. The castle had four towers, a chapel and a kitchen. Access to the castle was through a gate house that was converted to a tower house in the 15th century. This tower house and some walls are all that remain of the castle.
