Nachdem die Normannen unter Strongbow Ende des 12. Jahrhunderts weite Teile Irlands erobert hatten, bauten sie auch in Kilkenny eine Burg. Diese sollte einerseits die Stadt schützen, andererseits einen wichtigen Übergang über den Fluss Nore beherrschen. Viele Jahrhunderte lang war das Schloss im Besitz der einflussreichen Familie Butler, die es immer wieder umbauen und nach Beschädigungen durch kriegerische Auseinandersetzungen restaurieren ließen. 1935 verließen die Butlers aber Irland und das Schloss verfiel. In den 1960er Jahren verkauften die Butlers das Schloss an die Stadt Kilkenny, die.es restaurieren ließ und für Besucher öffnete.
After the Norman had conquered vast parts of Ireland at the end of the 12th century, they also built a castle in Kilkenny. On the one hand it protected the town, on the other hand it controlled an important crossing over the River Nore. It was owned by the family Butler during many centuries, who had it modified and restored after military conflicts for several times. In 1935 the Butlers left Ireland and the castle fell into ruins. In the 1960s the Butlers sold the castle to the town of Kilkenny, who had it restored and opened to the public.
