Killorglin

Im frühen 13. Jahrhundert erbaute der Anglo-Normanne Maurice FitzGerald eine Burg nahe der Mündung des Flusses Laune und am gegenüberliegenden Ufer in Dromavally gründeten Augustiner Mönche ein Kloster. Um diese beiden Zentren entwickelte sich die Stadt Killorglin (Cill Orglan - die Kirche des Lorcain (Lorenz)). Nach der Desmond Rebellion wurden die Fitzgeralds enteignet und Killorglin wurde an Jenkin Conway übergeben. Conway erbaute eine neuer Burg, von der heutzutage fast nichts mehr existiert. Die späteren Grundherren waren die Familien Blennerhassett und Mullins. 1885 kam die Eisenbahn nach Killorglin und brachte wirtschaftlichen Aufschwung. Heute ist Killorglin das wirtschaftliche, kulturelle und touristische Zentrum der Gegend.
In the early 13th century the Anglo-Norman Maurice FitzGerald built a castle close to the mouth of the river Laune and on the opposite banks in Dromavally Augustinian monks founded a monastery. Around these two centres the town of Killorglin (Cill Orglan - the church of Lorcain (Lawrence)) developed. After the Desmond Rebellion the Fitzgeralds were dispossessed and Killorglin was handed over to Jenkin Conway. Conway reconstructed the castle, of which nowadays next to nothing is left. The later landlords were the family Blennerhassett and Mullins. In 1885 the railway came to Killorglin and brought an economic upswing. Today Killorglin is the economic, cultural and touristic centre of the area.
