Die erste Burg von Listowel wurde im 13. Jahrhundert errichtet, um einen wichtigen Übergang über den River Feale zu beschützen. Die Familie Fitzmaurice ersetzte sie im 15. Jahrhundert durch das noch heute bestehende Gebäude. 1600 wurde die Burg von der englischen Krone erobert und an die Familie Hare übertragen. Danach verfiel die Burg. Die beiden noch erhalten gebliebenen Türme (von ursprünglich vier) werden vom Office of Public Works betreut, das sie nach der Renovierung 2005 für Besucher zugänglich machte.
The first castle of Listowel was built in the 13th century to protect an important crossing over the River Feale. The family Fitzmaurice replaced it by the still existing building in the 15th century. In 1600 the castle was conquered by the English Crown and conferred to the family Hare. Afterwards, the castle fell into ruins. The two still remaining towers (of originally four) are managed by the Office of Public Works that opened them to the public after a renovation in 2005.
