Kirche zur Hl. Maria / St. Mary Church

Mit dem Bau der katholischen Kirche zur Hl. Maria wurde in den 1830ern auf Betreiben des Stadtpfarrers Pater Darby Mahony begonnen. Das Grundstück an der Süd-West-Ecke von The Square wurde vom Grundherren William Hare, 1. Graf von Listowel, zur Verfügung gestellt. Die Kirche ersetzte eine Kapelle, die bereits baufällig und zu klein geworden war. Die Große Hungersnot und Geldmangel verzögerten die Fertigstellung jedoch um einige Jahrzehnte, so wurde der Turm erst 1866 gebaut. Danach wurde die Kirche noch einige Male vergrößert, renoviert und modifiziert, nicht zuletzt in Folge des 2. Vatikanischen Konzils.
The construction works on St. Mary's Catholic Church began in the 1830s at the instigation of the parish priest Father Darby Mahony. The premises at the south-west corner of The Square were provided by the land lord William Hare, 1st Earl of Listowel. The church replaced a chapel that already had become dilapidated and too small. However, the Great Famine and lack of money delayed the completion for several decades, like the tower was only built in 1866. Afterwards the church was extended, renovated and modified for a few times, not least because of the 2nd Vatican Council.
