Normannische Motte / Norman Motte

Die Stadt Granard (Gránard) wird schon in Dokumenten aus dem 9. Jahrhundert erwähnt. Um 1200 erbaute der Anglo-Normanne Richard de Tuite eine Befestigungsanlage mit einer Motte, von der aber nur wenig mehr als bewachsene Hügel übrig geblieben ist. Eine Statue des Hl. Patricks schaut von der Motte auf die daneben liegende Kirche hinunter, bei der ein Beichtstein aus der Zeit zu finden ist, als Katholizismus verboten war.
The town of Granard (Gránard) is already mentioned in documents from the 9th century. Around 1200 the Anglo-Norman Richard de Tuite built a fortress with a motte, of which little more than overgrown mounds remain. A statue of St. Patrick looks down from the top of the motte onto the church beside it. Near the church a confession stone from the time of the Penal Laws can be found.
