Normannische Motte / Norman Motte

Bei unserem ersten Besuch 2015 war es sehr nass, der Zugang zur Motte stand unter Wasser und alle Böschungen waren gatschig und rutschig. Zehn Jahre später haben wir trockenes Wetter und können daher den Hügel erklimmen. Trittfeste Schuhe sind trotzdem empfohlen. Obwohl der Gipfel auf nur knapp 200 Meter Seehöhe ist, haben wir von ihm aus ein großartige Aussicht weit in alle Richtungen.
Kein Wunder, dass bereits in keltischer Zeit eine Festung auf dem Hügel erbaut wurde, deren Erdwälle noch zu erkennen sind. 1199 erbaute der Anglo-Normanne Richard de Tuite innerhalb dieser Festung eine Motte, die den Burghof (Bailey) um ca. 4 Meter überragt. Die von den O'Farrells/Ó Fearghaills gebaute Burg stand möglicherweise neben der Motte, erhalten ist sie nicht geblieben.
During our first visit in 2015 it was very wet, the access to the motte was flooded and all slopes were muddy and slippery. Ten years later we have dry weather and therefore can climb up the hill. Sturdy shoes are still recommended. Although the top of the hill is a little short of 200 metres sea level we have a great view far into all directions.
No wonder that on the hill a fortress had already been built in Celtic times, the earth walls of which still can be seen. In 1199 the Anglo-Norman Richard de Tuite built a motte within the fortress that exceeds the bailey by roughly 4 metres. The castle built by the O'Farrells/Ó Fearghaills stood probably beside the motte, but nothing of it remains.
