Millmount Fort

Millmount im Südteil der Stadt erhielt seinen Namen von einer Windmühle, die im Mittelalter auf ihm stand. Im frühen 12. Jahrhundert befestigten ihn die Anglo-Normannen mit einer Motte und einem Bailey, gegen Ende dieses Jahrhunderts wurden sie durch eine Festung ersetzt. Diese wurde 1649 von Oliver Cromwell eingenommen. Anfang des 19. Jahrhundert wurde der Martello Turm zur Verteidigung gegen die napoleonische Armee gebaut. Er prägt heute noch das Stadtbild von Drogheda. Die Festung wurde im irischen Bürgerkrieg (1922 - 1923) schwer beschädigt, aber Anfang des 21. Jahrhunderts restauriert und beherbergt heute das Militärmuseum.
Millmount in the southern part of the town got its name from the windmill that stood on it during medieval times. In the early 12th century the Anglo-Normanns fortified it by a motte and bailey, which were replaced by a fort towards the end of that century. It was conquered by Oliver Cromwell in 1649. At the beginning of the 19th century a Martello Tower was erected as protection against the Napoleonic army. It still dominates the townscape of Drogheda. The fort was badly damages duing the Irish Civil War (1922 - 1923), but reconstructed at the beginning of the 21th century and now houses the Military Museum.
