Emo Court

(2006-08-01)

In 1790 James Gandon began, on order of John Dawson the 1st Earl of Portarlington, with the creation of Emo (Ioma) Court. But it would take almost another hundred years before the estate was finally finished under the 3rd Earl. When the last of the Portarlingtons left Emo in 1920, the estate started to decline, however was rescued by Mr. Cholmeley-Harrison in 1969, who restored the house and the grounds and later handed it over to the Dúchas, the Heritage Service.

The whole premises are 35 hectares in size, the driveway to the house is through a dense forest.
