Newgrange

Eingang / Entrance

(2000-07-18)

The famous entrance stone of Newgrange with the triple spirals challenges the fantasy of the scientists. The meaning of the spirals is not cleared yet, two theories are favoured:

  • Birth - death - rebirth, the circle of life. In a place, where the dead bodies were greeted by the rising sun of the midwinter solstice, this explanation seems to fit perfectly.
  • Or the three spirals show, as a map of the landscape, the three large passage tombs in the Boyle valley: Newgrange, Knowth and Howth.

Through the window above the entrance the rays of the rising sun during the winter solstice fall into the last part of the tomb. In the Visitor's Centre there is the possibility to take part in a lottery. The winners are then allowed to watch the spectacle themselves from the interior of the great chamber.
