Die schottische Familie Conyngham kam 1611 nach Irland. Als das Land nach dem Krieg der zwei Könige (1689 - 1691) neu aufgeteilt wurde, erwarben die Conynghams 1703 das Anwesen, ließen Slane Castle vergrößern und seither ist es ihr Familiensitz. Seit 1981 finden am Gelände der Burg große Rockkonzerte statt. 1991 zerstörte ein Feuer ein Drittel der Burg, der Rest wurde schwer beschädigt. Der Wiederaufbau dauerte 10 Jahre. Die Burg wird auch gerne als Kulisse für Musikvideos und Filme und für regelmäßig Veranstaltungen verwendet.
Der öffentliche Zutritt ist aber nur während dieser Veranstaltungen möglich und eine private Tour wollen wir auch nicht buchen. So müssen wir uns mit dem ehemaligen Haupteingang zum Anwesen zufrieden geben.
The Scottish family Conyngham came to Ireland in 1611. When the country was newly divided after the Williamite War (1689 - 1691) the Conynghams purchased the estate, had Slane Castle enlarged and it is since then their family residence. Since 1981 large rock concerts are hosted on the grounds of the castle. In 1991 a fire destroyed one third of the castle and left the other parts badly damaged. The reconstruction lasted for 10 years. The castle is also favoured as scenery for music videos and movies and as location for frequent events.
However the public access to it is only possible during these events and we do not want to book a private guided tour. So we have to be satisfied with the former main entrance to the estate.
