The middle and the Shannon

Leitrim - Cavan - Roscommon - Longford - Westmeath - Offaly - Laois

Trotz der vielen Grafschaften kommen wir bei unseren ersten paar Reisen eher selten in die Mitte der Insel, was vor allem darin liegt, dass wir lieber entlang der Küste reisen (als Österreicher wissen wir ja, wie grüne Berge und Seen aussehen - aber der Atlantik ist eine ganz neue, tolle Erfahrung). Die fünfte Reise ist dann fast ausschließlich den großen Wasserläufen in der Mitte gewidmet. Die Landschaft ist geprägt von sanften grünen Hügeln, im Norden gibt es auch höhere Berge. Wir kommen aber auch durch riesige Gebiete mit Moor, die einen tollen Kontrast zum Grün bieten.

In spite of the many counties during our first few travels we seldom come to the middle of the island, mainly because we prefer to travel along the coast (being from Austria we know how green mountains and lakes look alike - but the Atlantic ocean is a wholly new, fantastic experience for us). The fifth trip on the other hand is mostly dedicated to the great waterways in the middle. The landscape is dominated by gentle green hills, in the north there are higher mountains, too. We also go through large areas of bog that offer a great contrast to the green.

Irland Mitte Unser erstes Ziel ist das Ganggrab bei Cootehill (County Cavan Cv), dann fahren wir an der Grenze zu Nordirland (und manchmal auch über der Grenze) nach Belturbet. Wir folgen dem Shannon-Erne-Waterway, finden unterwegs den Killycluggin Stone und besuchen den Shannon Pot.
Hier biegen wir nach Süden ab, und suchen in Fenagh (County Leitrim Lt) einen Dolmen, bevor wir nach Carrick-on-Shannon fahren.
Wir spazieren durch den Lough Key Forest Park (County Roscommon Rc) und übernachten in Boyle, wo wir die Sehenswürdigkeiten in der Stadt und im umliegenden Land besuchen. Ein Stück weiter südlich von Boyle kommen wir zum Rathcrogan Cairn und werfen einen Blick auf die Windmühle von Elphin.
Immer weiter Richtung Süden fahren wir durch Roscommon, bis wir am Castlestrange Stone vorbei kommen und am Ufer des Lough Ree Halt machen.
Bei Athlone überqueren wir nicht nur den Shannon, sondern wir kommen auch in das County Westmeath (Wm). Jetzt geht es nach Osten bis nach Mullingar. Südlich der Stadt besuchen wir den Hill of Uisneach, den J. Swift Park und das Belvedere.
Jetzt machen wir einen Umweg in das County Laois (Ls) um Emo Court und den Park zu sehen.
Gerade durch das County Offaly (Of) fahren wir zurück zum Shannon, wobei wir unterwegs die Rahan Church, den Blackwater Bog und den Clonfinlough Stone besuchen.
Den Shannon flussabwärts kommen wir zur Klosterruine Clonmacnoise und der daneben stehenden Normannen Burg, hinter der nächsten Biegung des Flusses liegt die romanische Kirche von Clonfert (County Galway Gw).
Das Schloss und der Park von Birr (County Offaly Of) sind einen weiteren Umweg wert.
Von hier geht es nach Süden am Lough Derg (Counties Tipperary Tp, Glaway Gw, Clare Cl) entlang bis nach Killaloe (County Clare Cl).

Irland Middle Our first target is the Cootehill tomb (County Cavan Cv), then we drive along the border to Northern Ireland (sometimes crossing the border) to Belturbet. We follow the Shannon-Erne-Waterway, find the Killycluggin Stone along the way and visit the Shannon Pot.
Here we turn southwards and search a dolmen in Fenagh (County Leitrim Lt), before we go on to Carrick-on-Shannon.
We walk through the Lough Key Forest Park (County Roscommon Rc) and stay overnight in Boyle, where we visit the sights of the town and the surrounding country. A little farther to the south of Boyle we come to the Rathcrogan Cairn and have a quick glance at the windmill of Elphin.
Again heading south we drive through Roscommon, until we pass Castlestrange Stone and make a stop at the shores of Lough Ree.
In Athlone we not only cross the Shannon, but we also enter the County Westmeath (Wm). Now we go east until Mullingar. South of the town we visit the Hill of Uisneach, J. Swift Park and Belvedere.
A detour takes us into the County Laois (Ls) to see Emo Court and the park.
Straight through the County Offaly (Of) we drive back to the Shannon, on our way we visit the Rahan Church, the Blackwater Bog and the Clonfinlough Stone.
Following the Shannon downstream we come to the cloister ruins of Clonmacnoise and the ruins of the Norman castle beside it, behind the next bend of the river lies the Romanesque church of Clonfert (County Galway Gw).
The castle and the park of Birr (County Offaly Of) are worth another detour.
Again going south we drive along Lough Derg (Counties Tipperary Tp, Glaway Gw, Clare Cl) until Killaloe (County Clare Cl).
