Auf der Suche nach dem Rundturm landen wir zufällig im Turlough Park. Wir sind begeistert - der Park ist weitläufig (ca. 15 Hektar), sehr schön gestaltet, überall sind Blumen.
Turlough Park war der Familiensitz der Fitzgeralds seit der Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts. 1865 ließ Charles Lionel Fitzgerald ein neues Haus im "Victorian Gothic" Stil bauen. Anfang der 1990er verkaufte die Familie das Anwesen an das Land Mayo, das in neu errichteten Trakten neben dem Haus das Museum für ländliche Lebensart etablierte, das über Traditionen und das tägliche Leben im ländlichen Irland zwischen 1850 und 1950 erzählt. Das Untergeschoß des Hauses ist für Besucher, die einen Blick in das Leben der Viktorianischen Zeit werfen wollen, zugänglich.
While searching for the round tower, we come to Turlough Park by chance. We are amazed - the park is quite large (about 15 hectare), very beautifully constructed, there are flowers everywhere.
Turloguh Park was the family estate of the Fitzgeralds since the middle of the 17th century. In 1865 Charles Lionel Fitzgerald had a new house built in "Victorian Gothic" style. In the 1990s the family sold the estate to the Mayo County Council, that established the Museum for Country Life with its exhibition about traditions and everyday life in rural Ireland between 1850 and 1950 in newly constructed buildings close to the house. The groundfloor of the house is open to visitors, who want to have a closer look at life during the Victorian Age.
