Newport

Newport (Baile Uí Fhiacháin) wurde am Anfang des 18. Jahrhunderts von Captain Pratt im Auftrag der Grundbesitzer, der Familie Medlycot, erbaut. Seine Lage direkt am Meer und die Gezeiten erlaubten es selbst großen Schiffen in die Mündung des Flusses Black Oak zu segeln. Die Stadt florierte bis die Große Hungersnot hereinbrach.

Nach der Hungersnot finanzierte der Händler Martin Carey ein Wiederaufbauprogramm. Dabei wurde unter anderem die Kirche zum Hl. Patrick (1918) erbaut, die alleine durch ihre Lage eines der impossantesten Bauwerke Newports ist (Bildmitte).

Ein weiteres markantes Bauwerk ist die sieben-bogige Eisenbahnbrücke, die für die Strecke von Westport nach Achill Island gebaut wurde und von 1894 bis 1937 in Betrieb war (rechts im Bild).

Newport (Baile Uí Fhiacháin) was constructed at the beginning of the 18^th century by Captain Pratt by order of the landlords, the family Medlycot. Its location directly on the sea and the tides allowed even big ships to sail into the mouth of the Black Oak River. The town flourished until the Great Famine struck.

After the famine the trader Martin Carey bankrolled a reconstruction programme. Among other things, St. Patrick's Church (1918) was built, which by its location alone is one of the most imposing buildings in Newport (middle of the picture).

Another prominent building is the seven-arched railway viaduct that was built for the railway line from Westport to Achill Island and which was in operation from 1894 to 1937 (right part of the picture).
