Donegal - Nordirland/Northern Ireland

Vom Norden der Insel haben wir hauptsächlich Donegal gesehen, nur ein kurzer Ausflug nach Antrim stand auf unserem Reiseplan.
Donegal stimmt uns in seiner Kargheit noch melancholischer als der Westen. Steile Küsten, immer wieder unterbrochen von einsamen Sandstränden, und kahle Berge von Hochmooren bedeckt prägen diese Landschaft. Die Dörfer und Städte liegen weit auseinander und die einzigen Lebewesen, die wir oft für Stunden sehen, sind Schafe - wie schon gewohnt neben und auf der Straße. Auch das Wetter ist hier sehr viel rauher als weiter im Süden; Wärmende Sonne und heftiger Regen wechseln einander mehrmals am Tag ab.

Nordirland - bestehend aus den Cos. Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, (London)Derry und Tyrone - sehen wir nur kurz. Und doch gewinnen wir den Eindruck, dass hier die Straßen besser asphaltiert, die Häuser besser gepflegt sind. Als wir durch Derry fahren, fallen uns unwillkürlich all die Berichte über Bombenanschläge der letzten Jahre ein und es beschleicht uns ein eigenartiges Gefühl. Sobald wir jedoch die Stadt hinter uns lassen, vergeht die Unruhe wieder und wir können die Schönheiten des Landes genießen. Allerdings freuen wir uns jetzt schon, wenn der Euro auch hier eingeführt wird, denn für einen Tag Geld umzutauschen ist ein ziemliches Verlustgeschäft (Irische Pfund werden wenn dann nur ungern genommen).

Of the north of the island we have mainly seen Donegal, only a short trip to Antrim was in our travel plans.
Donegal puts us in its meagreness into a melancholic mood even more then the west. Steep coasts, often interrupted by lonesome beaches, and barren mountains covered with upland moors form this landscape. The villages and towns are far apart and the only living beings that we often see for hours are sheep - as we are already used to beside and on the road. The weather here is rougher then in the south, too; Warming sun and heavy rains alternate with each other several times a day.

Northern Ireland - consisting of the Cos. Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, (London)Derry and Tyrone - we only see for a short time. But we gain the expression, that the roads and houses are better attended to. When we drive through Derry, we cannot help but remember all the reports of bombings during the last couple of years and we get a creepy feeling. Right after leaving the town behind us, we lose this feeling and can enjoy the beauty of the country. But we are looking forward to the introduction of the Euro here also, because the exchange of the little bit of money we need for just one day is a losing business (Irish Pounds are grudgingly accepted).

Zu Beginn unserer Reise durch Donegal (County Donegal Dg) besuchen wir die Slieve Leagues und Glencolumbkille. Weiter geht es der Küste entlang nach Norden zum Bloody Foreland. Wir biegen ab ins Landesinnere und kommen vorbei am Mount Errigal und dem Poison Valley zum Glenveagh National Park. In Letterkenny besuchen wir die Kathedrale, ein Stück weiter im Osten das Ringfort Grianan Aileach. Jetzt fahren wir direkt nach Norden, bis zum nördlichsten Punkt der Insel, dem Malin Head. Unser nächstes Ziel - Dunluce Castle - liegt bereits im County Antrim (An) in Nordirland. Nur einen Katzensprung entfernt befindet sich der Giant's Causeway, wo wir unsere Reise auch beenden.

At the begin of our journey through Donegal (County Donegal Dg) we visit the Slieve Leagues and Glencolumbkille. Way north along the coast we reach the Bloody Foreland. We turn inland and passing Mount Errigal and the Poison Valley come to the Glenveagh National Park. In Letterkenny we visit the cathedral and a short way towards the east the ring fort Grianan Aileach. Now we drive directly northwards until the most northern spot of the island, the Malin Head. Out next target - Dunluce Castle - is already located in County Antrim (An) in Northern Ireland. Only a little bit further there is the Giant's Causeway, where we end our journey.
