Katholische Kirche zu Mariae Himmelfahrt / Catholic Church of the Assumption

Die früheste Kirche in der Gegend um das heutige Tullamore wurde im 6. Jahrhundert in Durrow gebaut. Und bis zur Auflösung der katholischen Kirchen und Klöster in der Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts war die Pfarrkirche von Durrow für die Bewohner von Tullamore die nächstgelegene Kirche. Dann folgten 200 Jahre Unterdrückung des katholischen Glaubens in denen Messen nur im Geheimen gefeiert werden konnten. In den 1790ern wurden die strengen Penal Laws gelockert und da Tullamore in der Zwischenzeit zu einer Stadt herangewachsen war, wurde der Bau einer eigenen katholischen Kirche geplant. Das Grundstück wurde vom Grundherren Charles William Bury, Lord Charleville, zur Verfügung gestellt. Die Kirche wurde 1802 fertiggestellt.
Hundert Jahre später war sie in baufälligem Zustand und der damalige Gemeindepriester Pater Hugh Behan begann mit der Planung einer neuen Kirche. Als Architekten wurden William Hague und sein Schüler Thomas F. McNamara ausgewählt, die eine Kirche im Neu-Gotischen Stil und mit einer beeindruckenden Höhe von ca. 60 Metern planten. Der Grundstein wurde 1898 gelegt, der Baubeginn verzögerte sich bis 1902. Die Kirche wurde am 7. Oktober 1906 mit einem großen Fest eingeweiht.
Doch am 31. Oktober 1983 brannte die Kirche vollständig aus. Nur mehr der Kirchturm und eine leere Hülle blieben zurück. Pater Patrick Fallon beauftragte die Architekten Edward N. Smith und Partner mit der Planung der Restaurierung. Als Baumeister wurde John Flanagan and Sons Limited ausgewählt. Das Äußere der Kirche wurde soweit wie möglich unverändert gelassen und wo notwendig im gleichen Stil repariert. Das Innere der Kirche wurde aber vollständig neu entworfen. Die Jesuiten Gemeinschaft in Rathfarnham Castle spendete Glasfenster aus den Harry Clarke Studios, das St. Patrick’s College in Drumcondra spendete die Bilder des Kreuzweges, die Church of Ireland steuerte das Taufbecken aus der alten Kirche in Lynally bei. Die Bauarbeiten begannen im Oktober 1984 und die renovierte Kirche wurde im August 1986 wieder eingeweiht.
The earliest church in the area of today's Tullamore was built in Durrow in the 6th century. And until the dissolution of Catholic churches and monasteries in the middle of the 16th century the parish church of Durrow was also the nearest church for the inhabitants of Tullamore. Then followed 200 years of suppression of the Catholic faith in which masses could only be celebrated in secret. In the 1790ies the severe Penal Laws were eased and as Tullamore had evolved into a town in the meantime the building of their own Catholic church was planned. A hundred years later it had fallen into serious disrepair and the then parish priest Father Hugh Behan began with the planning of a new church. William Hague and his pupil Thomas F. McNamara were chosen as architects and they planned a church in Neo-Gothic style with an impressive height of about 60 metres. The foundation stone was laid in 1898, but the start of construction was delayed until 1902. The church was dedicated on October 7th, 1906 with a large celebration.
Alas, on October 31st, 1983 the church burnt out completely. Only the spire and a hollow husk remained. Father Patrick Fallon commissioned the architects Edward N. Smith and Partner with the planning of a new church. John Flanagan and Sons Limited were selected as builders. The outside of the church was left unchanged as much as possible and were necessary was repaired in the same style. The inside of the church however was a completely new design. The Jesuit Community in Rathfarnham Castle donated stained glass windows from the Harry Clarke Studios, St. Patrick’s College in Drumcondra donated The Stations of the Cross, the Church of Ireland contributed a baptismal font from the old church of Lynally. Construction works began in October 1984 and the renovated church was again dedicated in August 1986.
