O'Connor Square

Als die Stadt Tullamore 1622 der Familie Moore zugesprochen wurde, war auch das Recht auf einen wöchentlichen Markt inkludiert. O'Connor Square (bis 1905 Charleville Square genannt) entstand im frühen 18. Jahrhundert und wurde als Marktplatz verwendet. Von den 16 Gebäuden die den Platz begrenzen, sind noch zehn Häuser erhalten, die vor 1800 gebaut wurden. Um 1820 wurde der Markt auf den neu angelegten Marktplatz verlegt. Bis in den 1990er wurde noch (Handels-)Messen am O'Connor Square abgehalten, dann endete eine lange Tradition. Oder besser gesagt: Pausierte, denn 2012 kam der Markt wieder zurück auf den Platz, als hier der erste Weihnachtsmarkt in Tullamore stattfand.
1926 wurde ein Denkmal für die im 1. Weltkrieg gefallenen Soldaten aus Offaly aufgestellt. Nach 1945 wird hier auch den im 2. Weltkrieg Gefallenen gedacht.
When the town of Tullamore was granted to the family Moore in 1622 that also included the right for a weekly market. O'Connor Square (until 1905 named Charleville Square) was created in the early 18th century and was used as market place. Of the 16 buildings bordering the square there are still ten houses existing that were built before 1800. Around 1820 the market was moved to the newly constructed Market Square. Until the 1990s fairs were still held on O'Connor Square, then the long tradition ended. Or better said: Paused, because in 2012 the market came back to the square when the first Christmas market in Tullamore took place.
In 1926 a memorial for the soldiers from Offaly fallen in the 1st World War was erected. After 1945 it also commemorates the fallen soldiers of World War II.
