Clonmacnoise
Am Shannon / At the Shannon
The monastery of Clonmacnoise (Cluain Mhic Nóis) was built directly beside the Shannon, which was the main traffic route of the area at that time. But also Vikings and Normans used the Shannon to get to their work - which was often the raiding of monasteries.
The only boats arriving here today ferry tourists along the river flowing slowly through the tranquil landscape.
