St. Mellas Zelle / St. Mella's Cell

Über einen schmalen, mit hohen Hecken begrenzten Weg kommen wir zu einer kleinen Einfriedung, in der die Ruine eines alten Gebäudes steht. Es ist zwar nach St. Mancháns Mutter Mella benannt, wurde aber erst um 1100 gebaut. Es könnte als Gebetshaus, Einsiedelei oder als Nonnenkloster verwendet worden sein.
Nachdem der Sturm Éowyn am 24. Jänner 2025 - dem Festtag des Hl. Manchán - einige Bäume entwurzelt hatte, wurden unter ihnen menschliche Knochen entdeckt. Diese wurden auf die zweite Hälfte des 1. Jahrtausends, also in die Frühzeit des Klosters, datiert.
Over a narrow path bordered by high hedges we come to a small enclosure with the ruin of an old building in it. While it is named after Mella, the mother of St. Manchán, it was built around 1100. It could have been used as oratory, hermitage or nunnery.
After storm Éowyn had disrooted some trees on January 24th, 2025 - the feast day of St. Manchán - human bones were discovered under them. They were dated to the second half of the first century, which coincidence with the early years of the monastery.
