Banagher
Cromwells Burg / Cromwell's Castle
In the middle of the 16th century the English conquered Banagher and took control of the important river crossing. They expanded an existing fortress and stationed a garrison in the town. After the conquest of Ireland by Oliver Cromwell around 1650 the English also fortified the bridge on the north side by a castle that was named after Cromwell. Fearing an invasion by the troops of Napoleon the castle was massively reinforced and equipped with a gun at the beginning of the19th century. The invasion failed to happen, the castle was abandoned in 1860. Afterwards the building fell to ruins, until it was renovated in the 1980ies by the Offaly Historical Society.
