Um die Schiffbarkeit des Shannons zu verbessern, baute der niederländische Ingeneur Thomas Omer in den 1750ern einen Kanal auf der Westseite des Flusses. Der wirtschaftliche Erfolg blieb aus, der Kanal wurde (bis auf ein kleines Endstück) verfüllt und ist heute der Banagher Park mit einer Freizeitanlage. Doch das Haus des Schleusenwärters ist erhalten geblieben.
Auf der Webseite der Schottischen Nationalbibliothek können alten Ordnance Survey Karten von Irland abgerufen werden. Auf dem Blatt 117 ist der Verlauf des alten Kanals von Banagher zu sehen. Es gibt auch eine nahtlose Karte der gesamten Insel. Alternativ kann das National Irish Historic Maps Dashboard mit der Suche nach "Banagher, Offaly, IRL" verwendet werden. Und natürlich kann der Historic Environment Viewer so konfiguriert werden, dass er alte Karten als Hintergrund anzeigt.
To improve the navigation of the Shannon the Dutch engineer Thomas Omer built a canal on the west side of the river in the 1750ies. The economic success did not come, the canal was (except a small end piece) filled in and is today the Banagher Park with a leisure facility. But the house of the lock keeper still stands.
On the website of the National Library of Scotland old Ordnance Survey maps of Ireland can be accessed. On the sheet 117 the course of the old canal of Banagher can be seen. There is also a seemless map of the whole island. Alternatively the National Irish Historic Maps Dashboard can be used, searching for "Banagher, Offaly, IRL". And of course the Historic Environment Viewer can be configured to show old maps as background.
