Martello Turm / Martello Tower

Der Martello-Turm war Teil der Befestigungsanlage, die von den Engländern Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts aus Furcht vor einer Invasion durch Napoleon erbaut wurde. Von den etwa 50 Martello-Türmen, die in Irland in dieser Zeit gebaut wurden, ist dies einer der einzigen zwei, die im Landesinnere stehen (der andere steht ein paar Kilometer flussabwärts). Mit dem Abzug der Garnison 1860 wurde auch der Turm aufgegeben. Er steht auf Privatgrund und ist nicht frei zugänglich.
The Martello tower was part of the fortification that was constructed by the English at the beginning of the 19th century fearing an invasion by Napoleon. Of the roughly 50 Martello towers that were built in Ireland at that time, this is one of only two that stand inland (the other one stands a few kilometres downstream). With the decommissioning of the garrison in 1860 also the tower was abandoned. It stands on private property and is not publicly accessible.
