Roscommon

In the middle of the 6th century St. Comán founded a monastery near the River Suck. The neighbouring forest became known as "Comán's wood", in Gaelic: Ros Comáin, from which the English name Roscommon derived.

The position of the town close to the border between the provinces Connacht and Leinster led to frequent conflicts between the Gaelic clans. The Clan O'Conor ruled Roscommon before the Anglo-Norman invasion. In the 1260ies the Anglo-Normans could conquer Roscommon and fortified it with a castle. But the O'Conors attacked again and again until they succeeded to recapture the town and the castle in the middle of the 14th century. The O'Conors ruled Roscommon for the next 200 years, albeit only with the consent of the English. Under Elizabeth I. the English again took over control of the town. But even then Roscommon was in the following decades the scene of armed battles, especially during the conquest of Ireland by Oliver Cromwell in the middle of the 17th century and the Williamite War at the end of that century.

Starting at the middle of the 18th century Roscommon developed into a town. Small manufacturing companies created employment and led to further growth. During the Great Famine in the middle of the 19th century about one third of the population died or emigrated. Until this day Roscommon is a centre of agriculture, but also tourism is an important source of income.
