Roscommon Burg / Roscommon Castle

(2025-07-14)

After the Anglo-Normans had conquered Roscommon, Robert of Ufford, Justiciar of Ireland, had fortified the town with a castle. The construction dragged on from 1269 until 1290, as the Clan O'Conor tried again and again to reconquer the lost territory. Even after the castle was completed the O'Conors tried to capture it, until they finally succeeded in the middle of the 14th century. For the next two centuries the O'Conors could (with two short time exceptions) fend off all attacks on the castle. In the 16th century the English increased their efforts to conquer the strategically important castle until the O'Conors surrendered in 1569. The government leased the castle to Nicholas Malby and then his son Henry, who rebuilt it into a fortified house. During that time the former moat was filled in and the walled garden was laid out. In the 1590ies the castle was besieged twice by Red Hugh O'Donnell and was also fought over during the Confederate Wars (1641 - 1653). In 1652 the castle was surrendered to the troops of Cromwell without a fight. After a fire in the year 1691 the castle was not rebuilt again and left to decay. The stones missing today were possible used for erecting other buildings in Roscommon.
